June 2024 Newletter

The sun is shining and the days are getting longer and the cars are venturing further afield. So things bode well for the rest of the year. Two great events happened in May:

The Printemps Run

A whizz around Surrey along some magical roads all ably organised by the Guildford Car Club. The oldest car was a 1925 Ford Model T and then an excellent selection all the way up to a Scoobie. Out of the 32 cars that took part (and all finished) there were six from WFTR. Weather was good, cyclists at a minimum (hooray) and the roads often free of traffic. A couple of hairy moments crossing major roads but all went well.

The Bluebell Run

Historic Rally Car Register Bluebell Run 11 May.  This was a superbly organised event based around the country lanes of Gloucester, Monmouthshire and Herefordshire using a Tulip road book.  Total event mileage was 122 so plenty of driving and navigation called for.  There were indeed still Bluebells out in many of the route waypoints and the scenery was lovely, especially so through the Forest of Dean.  Originally there were 7 WFTR cars and 14 booked in to attend the event and for our 2 night stay over having early registered to participate.  Such was the popularity of this event all 60 places were sold out within 8 hours of the entry list opening. Two cars did not depart from home location, one car made it, but was unable to participate, so 4 cars started and 3 completed the course.  Notwithstanding all of the difficulties such as traffic jams on a boiling hot Friday pm during the run down to the hotel in Monmouth we all had a lovely weekend.  The warm weather endured for a pleasant run home on Sunday.

Coming Up (as they say on the telly):

Crossness Pumping Station – 23 Jun

Crossness pumping station

A run down the A25 to Crossness to visit one of Bazelgette’s wonderful buildings. Pumping out the effluent of London. Registration is closed as you have to book in advance and it’s sold out.

Fun & Games on the Isle of Purbeck – 28 Jun – 1 Jul

A weekend away organised by Avis and Tim staying at the hotel where Enid Blyton wrote the Famous 5 books. So it’s time for an adventure!

At the May club night Graham explored the tunnels beneath London. In June it’s video night. For 6 minutes.

But we need your help! We need you to spend 20 minutes or so talking about your love of the Wombles, how to knit cheese or anything else that tickles your fancy. Doesn’t have to be special all you need to do is have a chat with your mates about something you enjoy or have done.

Committee Meetings

Each month the committee look forwards with great excitement to discussing all matters WFTR. So you don’t feel left out from now on we are letting you read the minutes of these momentous meetings:

Don’t Forget!

The Summer BBQ

Still time to register on what should be a fun packed day. Includes a horse show! If you haven’t already, get your name on the list so Lawrence and Suzanne know how many sausages to buy.

TR Action

We are still looking for a WFTR volunteer to write the periodic input about our Group for TR Action – please let the Committee know if you are willing to do this.

Long Weekend In Wales

Summer next year is a long time away, but several of us have booked for a return trip to Llanerchindda Farm in Wales from 13 – 16 June 2025. There are 6 places available and unless they are booked by us they will go to other non WFTR folk from the general public. The reason we have booked so far ahead is that this is necessary as they are so popular. This is not to be confused with the Wales trip this year being organised by Barry and Jenny.

And Finally…

After 11 years on both the committee and looking after the WFTR website, Graham has decided it’s time to shake off the burden of responsibility. He’s not disappearing, just preparing the way for his successor. Which means we need someone to take over running the WFTR website. It’s not an onerous task and full training will be provided. If you want to know more, see Graham at club night or on a run.
