August Newsletter

Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus (AKA Octavian) was the founder of the Roman Empire. Which is good to know. On the other hand Augustus Gloop was a rather greedy child in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Why Augustus? It’s because the entymology of the name brings us to the eight month which is of course August and when Dua Lipa was born (ask someone younger than you who they are).

And August 2001 is when the DVLA dropped the letter prefix to indicate year of registration.

And it’s the last ever WFTR newsletter by the current scribe and with a temporary scribe until the December news letter (read all the way to the bottom).

But onto much more important matters.

Phyllis Tuckwell Motor Show – 3 Aug

An excellent charity event held each year in Churt at the private collection of Robert and Tanya Lewis

Probably too late to register now but you can give it a go if you want to attend.

Register for Phyllis Tuckwell

Donald Campbell’s Bluebird – Clubnight 5th August

A once in a lifetime opportunity to hear Bill Smith talk about Bluebird and his current passion for restoring rare and high-end rally cars, to coincide with our monthly meeting at The Foresters on 5th August. A rare opportunity to hear the story from the horse’s mouth and meet a remarkably gifted engineer.

Collectively Camberley Car Show – 9 Aug

Used to be something WFTR members attended each year but seems to have dropped off the radar. But now we are back!

Registration is closed (we have filled up the town centre).

Summer BBQ & Formation Riding Demo – 17 Aug

Hightlight of the WFTR equestrian calendar! Go for a drive in your car, see the Pirbright horse show, drink beer and eat a sausage. Laurence and Suzanne promise fun times at their abode.

Register for the summer BBQ

Mapledurham Tour & Silchester Roman Village – 20 Aug

See where ‘The Eagle has Landed’ was filmed! Not sure how they got a U-boat to Reading but I’m sure we will find out.

Registration has closed (all places taken)

Alton Classic Car Show – 30 August

The second visit of WFTR to Alton. From all accounts a good day out.

Register for the Alton Car Show

Dimanche Tour – 31 August

The second day out in 2025 with the Guildford Car Club.

Register for the Printemps Run

2025 Canal Cruise

A second day out on the Basingstoke Canal. This time in the opposite direction. Many thanks to Trisha for organising, and thanks to the crew of the John Pinkerton for not getting lost.

Adventure Golf & Lunch

We had a full day of fun at Golfplex in Binfield starting with coffee followed by the golf. Now there is nothing like a game of Adventure Golf to bring out a competitive spirit (and lots of laughs along the way) with Tim and Avis being declared the worthy winners. We had a break for lunch and then tried our hand on the driving range with mixed success. Rounded off with tea and cake at Terry & Helen’s.

Hellfire Caves

A run down some of the narrowest roads in Buckinghamshire followed some spelunking, lunch in the walled garden and finally a climb up to the mausoleum. Ably organised by Tim and Avis.

Thames Valley Tour

Organised to the normal impeccable standard by Terry and Helen, we crossed the Thames at least twice and explored part of Buckinghamshire not seen before. Breakfast rolls at the Pathfinder Cafe, morning coffee in the drizzle, and lunch at Badgemore Park before returning to Blackbushe. 100 miles of excellent driving.

Committee Meetings

Each month the committee discusses all matters WFTR. So you don’t feel left out we have always made the minutes of these momentous meetings and the AGM available to read as follows:

WFTR Committee Meeting Minutes

Newsletter, Website and Committee Posts

Like those endless repeats of ancient TV shows you see on the telly we once again put out a call for help.

As yet nobody has come forward to be members of the committee from December. We still need someone to write the newsletter and someone to look after the website. As well as be Group Leader, Events Secretary and Membership Secretary. The AGM on 02 Dec is when we need volunteers to take on these roles from or at least form a skeleton committee to keep the WFTR flame alive.
