Part of the TR Register
Goodbye to Ireland

February 2013 Newletter

This newsletter is being written the evening following our February monthly meeting at The Forester’s Arms, Bagshot.

My reason for mentioning this is that your Committee and I are still recovering from the tremendous support those attending gave us at the meeting and in joining us in a lively debate about the matters to hand. This was despite several of those present having to forfeit the pleasure of watching the England football team beating Brazil on the TV in the adjoining room! They are clearly dedicated Register and WFTR members and their commitment is much appreciated.

Attendance was just short of 20 members, an excellent turnout for this time of year which included several members who had not previously attended our meetings, some returning members and others just visiting. Despite the non functioning of the central heating system in our meeting room, a warm welcome was extended to them all.

We trust everyone found the evening interesting and look forward to their continued participation in our Group activities.

We had quite a lengthy agenda to get through at our meeting due to all of the activities now planned following the election of your new Committee in December. The main item was a presentation and Q&A session on the new TR Register Insurance Scheme.  Over recent weeks this topic has seen significant discussion and comment on the TR Register Forum and was presented to Group Leaders for discussion at the recent GLs meeting in Gaydon on 3rd February.

The objective at our meeting was to provide more information on this new insurance scheme and answer questions to clarify the reasons for the change and the potential benefits for the Register and its members, now and in the future.

After a healthy discussion whilst we can’t claim to have put to rest everyone’s concerns, I think we succeeded in laying a few ghosts!

For those who still have questions or who were not able to attend we will be happy to return to this subject at future meetings. The benefits of this scheme are for all of us and it’s important therefore that members are able and have the information to make informed decisions.

A summary of the scheme and its benefits can be found on pages 16 & 17 of TR action No. 263 issued in January 2013.

As you will know from our earlier communications your Committee has planned a very full activity calendar which will start in earnest later this month and into the year as we go forward. Some of these events, even though they may be some months ahead require advanced booking if you are to gain entry, an additional benefit being the offer of significant discounts on entry for Early Birds.

To ensure you have the application forms necessary, our Social Secretary, Linda Eaton will email them to you ahead of time.

In order to ensure we keep in contact with those of our members who are not on email we have recently written to them enclosing a copy of our January newsletter and a hard copy of our membership survey for them to complete and return. I am also pleased to announce that our Membership Secretary, Nick Nigel has been able to negotiate with the TR Register Office that they will provide address labels and cover the cost of postage for a monthly mailing to these members through 2013.

Key dates and activities you should look out for in the next few months are as follows:

DRIVE IT DAY, 21st April

DRIVE IT DAY for the SE Region of the TR Register is being organised by Thames Valley Group, who won the distance award last year.

This is an opportunity to meet up with the other groups in the region. TVG have chosen Wakehurst Place, near Ardinglly, East Sussex as this year’s destination. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wakehurst-place/

Wakehurst Place is where Kew Gardens grow their seeds and is well worth a visit

It is a National Trust property and is free to National Trust members, OAP’s have a reduced rate too. There is a discounted price of £8.50 per person for adults coming to the gardens. Normal admission is £10.50 or £12.00 on the day.

Advanced booking is required at least one week before the event, although we would ask you to inform us of your attendance at your earliest opportunity.

Admission will include a catering offer (likely to be 1 x free tea or coffee with any purchase made in their Stables restaurant)

TVG have negotiated a dedicated parking area within the grounds for TRs on the day.

Inter Group Run to the RNLI Training Centre, Poole, Dorset, 21st April

We have been invited to join Chiltern TRs on a run to the RNLI Training Centre, Poole and lunch. As the day is also DRIVE IT DAY, WFTRs also plan to support the official run being organised this year by TVG to Wakehurst Place (see above).

If you plan to join the trip to Poole please let Linda know by 14th February as we need to inform Chiltern TRs of numbers and seek prior permission from the RNLI.

So, the choice is yours!
