Mapledurham
Cliff and Coral went to great effort to ensure our trip to Mapledurham was a success. After a leisurely breakfast we set of for Mapledurham. Our route took us via Silchester, originally the tribal centre of the Iron Age Atrebates which then became an important Roman town and is worth a return visit. The tour of Mapledurham House and grounds was led by ‘The lady of the House’ who had many fascinating stories of the house and its occupants, all told with great enthusiasm and much humour. A cream tea served in the Dining Room was followed by a visit to the church and watermill made famous by the 1976 film The Eagle has Landed starring Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland and Robert Duvall.
