2024 Thames Valley Tour

We met at The Raven in Hook for our breakfast bap before setting off for our coffee stop at Greenham Common Control Tower. Our second leg took us through some lovely country lanes to the Doubletree Hilton at Chieveley Services for a 3-course lunch.

For the most part the day went well but it was disappointing to find yet another closed road having already re-routed 4 times in the run up to the event, and doing a full route check last Tuesday, and finally checking the local authority roadworks website on Friday to ensure everything was open. It seems that there is now much more willingness to close roads than there ever was before.

There were 12 crews who found the correct answer to the prize challenge which was ‘Pangbourne’. The winners of the draw were the crew of car number 4, the rather splendid Studebaker. So that ensures they will be on next years event, which will be on the 20th July 2025 – put it in your diary now.

Rallying around were: Barry and Jenny, Graham and Mike, Laurence and Suzanne, Andy and Jane, Dave and Linda and Bruce and John.

Many thanks to Helen, Tim and Nick for their invaluable help on the day.

Greenham Common Control Tower
Graham given official warning by Tim about driving over manholes
Cars everywhere
Powermad official in dayglo vest
Latecomers to the party almost denied entrance
Jenny issued with yellow card for some infarction by grumpy umpire
Preparing to leave Greenham
Drivers running to their cars so as to not miss their start time
Graham showing off by driving with one hand.
Andy and Jane
Why all red?
Bunch of sixes at the Hilton.
Nick and Tim retain control by not handing out time cards until the exact second of departure. What you don’t see is the hovering crowd waiting for their number to be called.
